THE CHAMPION SCULLING MATCH.

Thk sculling match between Edward Hanlan, of Toronto, Canada and Thomas Clifford, of Illawarra, New .South Wales, for a stake of £000 a-side, was rowed over the Champian Course, Parramatta Fiver, this afternoon. Heavy rain fell before the race commenced, and the wator was consequently smooth. The race resulted in an easy victory for Hanlan by fully eight lengths. He led from start to finish, and was never asked to pull. Clifford rowed gamely throughout, but without eltect. Time: ±2mins. osecs The champion course is a straightaway one, and about 3 miles 330 yards in length. Hanlan's history as an oarsman is (says the Herald) iho well kuowu that it is unnecessary for us to tell it. Clifford hails from Illawarra Lake, and was backed and trained at the sole expense of Mr Spenser, of Sydney, who imported boats and purchased all other necessary Rear for the matches he has backed Clifford to compete in. On Saturday, '2Sth iust., he is matched to row the holder of the championship, Willian Beach, for a Btake of £200 aside, and in four weeka from that date the redoubtable Canadian meets Beach to endeavour to wrest back the honours of the championship of the world. In the event of Clifford beating Beach, he is matched to row Hanlan again for £300 »-aide on April \s\l\<
