A REMARKABLE WOMAN.
Thkkk has lately died at Benares an old lady who w.w in many respect-* one of the most remarkable personage* in Northern India. This wan Anna, w idow of (Jeneral James Kennedy, of the Bengal Cavalry. She w ,is in her ninety-sex enth year, h.« ing Im'oii born in 17K7, and the li\ed to hen no few or than 17(> lineal dercendants, of whom 12.S sun i\ c her. She had eighteen children, eighty grandchildren, .se\ enty-throe fjrv.itgiandclnldren, and fi\e great-great-giand-children. Her father, husband, two wins, one son-in-law, ■uul four grandsons h.ive been generals in the aimy, and lier descendant-, include many military officers of lower tank. Sho wan nmiiud ,tt fifteen, had eighteen children, was ne\er out of India for a single day, spent all her days in the plains, except once, when she paid a biief visit to the hills, the climate of winch disagreed with her. Her husband died a quuiter of a centuiy ago, at the lipe .age of eighty-two, after hfty-h\o years of man led life, For nearly forty years she has been the oentre of society at Benares, whoie .she has been as popular amongst the natives as amongst Europeans. She was proud of her activity of mind and body, which remained unimpaired almost up to the last ; and it is said of her that w hene\er the Maharajah of Benares, who wan one of her intimate fiiendx, paid her a visit she never failed to offer him, on leaving, the assistance of her ari||, though 1 o was thirty year*, her junior, Truly a ''mother of men." Tljo deceased lady was the grandmothei of Mi J.is. S. MnstiM, of Cambridge, who has often heaid of the. extraoidmaiy cncuinstances of hci cateei. The two sons mentioned in the niticle are still alive, one being Bngadei -General T. U. Kennedy, commanding forces at Allahabad, the other lirig.idu'r-lienei.il J.is. (}. Konnedy, in England, on furlough ; and the son-in-law mentioned, Lieut. -(Jeneral R. A. Master, C.8., late 3rd Eurqpean Bengal Luriifc C^nalry, K.Hj.I.C.S,, wa- the father of Mr J. S. Master. A fact worthy of mention in the career of the old lady is that during the whole of the Indian Mutiny fhe remained at Benares without molestation, although ■ nne of her children and giandcluldieu weie killed at other places during the mutiny. Her funeral wa« attended by o\ei h\u thousand nathes, besides Europeans, both cnil and militaiy.
