RAGLAN NEWS.

Ov the morning of January 16th a paity of 20 young |K>ople ascended Karioi, a liimm tun 2300 ft high, overlooking the Raglan distnet. They commenced the a^wnt .iliout 8 o'clock, lc.iMiig the farm of Mr Savage :ilM>ut th.it time. Theie is a good road up until nearly approaching the top, when it becomes rather steep. Though very fine .it starting, unfortunately a mist began to gather around the mountain top, thus preventing the paity fiom enjoying the fine \iew .it their feet. Ho\\e\ei, Kawhia harbour, Hamilton and most parts of the Raglan distiict were visible, and, after fixing a flag, and enclosing their names in a bottle, and huiying the same under a otone, the mountaineeis descended, leaching the homesteads of Mr Savage and Mitchell al>out 4 o'clock. The appearance of the mountain is most beautiful at this tune of the year, the rata being in full flower and its ciimson hue amongst the d.uk foliage being very striking. The fine weather wo are now ha\ing is ripening the crops fa*t. The Raglan and Hamilton road is now in good condition, and a good number of persons are coming over here from Waikato. The mail contractor, Mr Sutton, had two full conveyances last Saturday, and Mr Johnson has also been o\er several tunes. A public meeting is to be held here ne\t week to take into consideration the present steam service, alno to take action on having a new wharf built out into deep w.iter. The freight charged to thin place it> nearly ten shillings per ton more than to Waitara, the steamers being detained for more than one tide. If a new wharf was erected they could discharge cargo and leave by the same tide, thus saving a good deal of exense. A good nuniltcr of visitors are in Raglan to-day, .some attending the R.M. Court. Otheis, better employed, have come o\er from Waikato to enjoy the sea air, and a number of gentlemen proceed to view the celeiu .ited falls near heie to-morrow . — (Own Correspondent, Jan. 27.)
