THE MONAVALE BRIDGE.
TO THK KIIITOR. Sin, — It is quite evident tli.it some porson is watching the Monav.ile bridge with mnre than ordinary interest, and I am afr.nd for a \ery mean purpose. There was a statement in Tuesday's issue that is calculated to mislead outsiders, everything being laid to the Hize of the piles. The fact ih the winch is a very old one, and to my knowledge has been unfit for pile driving for some years. The *ides are broken, the barrel 13 ditto, and the cogs are that much worn, that one slips t>y the other instead of locking. And now for the extra strength. To drive piles with a twenty cwt. monkey off the hinglo purchase you require four men besides the man attending to the pile ; the contractor had three men besides himself. So I can't fee where the extra strength comes in. With regard to tho gully washing away m> as to interfere with the putting up of the bridge, it has not done s-<> jet. In justice to all concerned, I hone you will inseit this in your nett issue ana oblige.— l am, kc. T. J. Mkrkihi-h. T.W.C.C.
