SPORTING. Waipa Racing Club's Meeting.
Tho entries for the Wnipa Club's annual meeting are most satisfactory, and give promise of good acceptance-!. It i» to be Imped thin mctting will be ns ouecesttful u the last, l'he course w now one of the best, rind will in the course of another year \v3 the best m the province. The committee widely determined to give small prize* until they are in a portion to give big ones. Me.inUme, any surplus funds they may h.ue will be expended on the oune in improvements such sxs saddling paddock, stewards-room, loo*o boxes, &c. 1 considerable mini ha« been expended already on the ring in levelling, harrowing, rolling and laying it down in grass. A grand -stand is not required— for some time at any rate— as there in a hill which in a natural grain! stand. The winning post is about thirty-the or forty yards from tho foot of the hill, which rises with sufficient abruptness to admit of the spectators sitting in rowM from the bottom to the top without those Ikjloh* obstructing the view of people above them. From the foot of tho hill to th.i edge of tho course there is a gentle slope which could be made into a beautiful lawn ; tlio crown of the hill can be planted with trees which would give an .*i£freoable shade on hot dty«. All these improvements will be ni%do, but the time when thej - will bs made depends on the state of the funds which depend on the amount of support acordod by the public, so that those who wish to iee the club a Rucce--s and the sport kept up, should assist the committee by becoming members. The fee for membership is vory small and within tho means of all. Racing has always been miccesaful in this* district, and it i»li mid rect ive .1 zood measure of support from <* community confessedly a sporting ono. That the club will be a decided rtiiccess no one can doubt ; it hat every advantage, a nito not to be surpassed for the course, suitability of .soil, for it will never be muddy, no matter how wet the weather, nor hard no matter how dry, and last, but not least, the railway running within two hundred yards of the course. With all theoc advantages it cannot fail of being a success. — (Own C<u respondent.)
