Mr Richndson, Minister for Public Woiks, leaves for Chrixtchurcb on Friday next, and will probably meet Mr Stout theie dining uoxt week. Mr Liruach is already making a-ir.uigemonts for a \isit to the West Co.iht of th« Middle Island, and tlie l'leuner will accompany him. Tho visit is behe\ed In be 111 connection with the hi->r opuiations of tho Westpoit Harbour 13oaul, and that u banquet on a moot siitn|)tiious scalo Ji.irt been arranged. The Minister for Public Works will probably make before hi» letum a t<<ur of the South Island, on matters connected with the dcpaitments o\ur which ho has imntcdiato charge. The Wellington (Jas Company liavo made a reduction in the pi ice of gas, and from the Ist Febiuary next the price will be 12s lid pet 1000 feet, instead of 15a, as at present, and this with a discount of 3s tid per 1000 feet, will make tho net price 9s, or a reduction of Is per 1000 feet on the pre«ont rate. A reduction of (id por 1000 feet is also to be mado on gas used for heating and cooking purposes-. lufotmation has been received showing that K. S. Watei house, formerly merchant at Wellington, did not tarry long in .Sydney, and that he has left there for some destination unknown. He is supposed to have had between £2000 and £3000 in cash when he levanted fiom here. Mr Laruach received a deputation of fruit importers to-day on the subject of remowng ie»trictions on the importation of Krapc*. The deputation pointed out that comparatively few grapps were grown in tho colony, and what were grown were hothouse productions. The unpoitntion of grapes could not possibly affect New Zealand vines, which were at present suffering not only fiom phylloxera, but also from othei diseabes. The deputation urtred that tho \ineyards of the Austialian colonies were, with \ery few o*ccption>, clear at tho picscnt tune. It was further urged that the giapos grown in this colony wore products of the hot-house, and hence their pi ico was prohibitory to the general public. Mi Lainac-h 111 reply, said ho would convey the mows of the deputation to hid collciguiM. Pel tonally, lie was opposed to lemoving tho restrictions, as he believed that the disease might be transmitted not only through grapeb. but also by the imp >rt.ition of raibins. Conui'unuMtions with the (io\erninents of the Austr i'« m colonies show that whereas Add.udo is clean, Victoria and Sydney were still infected, and he thought danger of infection to New Zealand might aiiso if grapes were shipped at Melbourne for this colony. Ho considerod that the people should be glad of the rosti totions, as it inu/ht stand to create an industry, Ho promised to confer with his colleague,, and forward discussion.
llontst reproof is far better for us than doubtful praise ; but where will you find the man who has got the nerve to give it? or the one who has got iho sense to taks ;tr
