WE LLINGTON, Thursday. Thk trial of Waring Taylor will be commenced on Monday next. The Government Insurance Department has taken up the Lilance of the South Invercargill Municipal Loan of £4000 at par. Mr L-iriiach's appointment as Minister of Mines and Marine is gazetted. A prize of five pounds each is offered by the Government for the best design for a medal and certificate for the Industrial Exhibition. Designs are to be sent in on or before February 14. DUNKDIN, Thursday. At the invitation of the Otago Maimfacturers' Association, the Government have deputed Mr Federli to visit this district. Friday. At the trade and labour congress to-day, the following motion by Mr Howland, of Christchurch, was carried by a large majority after an interesting debate. " That with the view of fostering rami encouraging local industries in New Zealand, a duty of not less that 20 per cent be placed on all foreign manufactured goods that can he made successfully within the colony, and that all raw materials for such manufactures be admitted free of duty."
