John' WhitkmaN, guard of the iineicaigill express tram was killed oil the journey to Dunediu, when near Lovells Flat. He w.is walking on the top of a carriage to reach the rear of the train, and ha\ing liw back to the ongnto did not obsnrvo the close proximity of a bridge. He was struck by the lower part of the bridge on the head and killed instantaneously.
