The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE.

liquil and evict justice to all men, 01 wh-Usocver state or pcrsu.-ision, religious or political. Here sh.i'l the Pn"-s the People's right maintain, Una wed bj influence and unbnbed by gain.

TUESDAY, DEC. 23, 1884.

The Agent-General in London for the colony of Victoria telegraphs to the Government of that colony discrediting the report that Germany had annexed a portion of New Guinea with the islands adjoining. And he does thus upon the very sufficient authority of the German Embassy in London. Assuming, as wo are bound to do, that Mr Murray Smith is right, it is not easy to undor.staud how the story about tho annexation got abroad, unless it can be traced to the insane yearning after tho sensational which appears to actuate the management of the Tress telegraph agencies. The seizure of the northern coast of New Guinea, with New Britain and tho adjacent islands, involved a train of complications .so enchanting as" to carry the imaginative Press agent off his feet, and when in that ecstatic state truth loses for hi uj its sacred character, and becomes a very second-rate article indeed. What would happen had the story proved to have been founded on fact, can only be conjectured. That Australians would strongly resent the action of Germany admits of no doubt, and it is more than probable that the English people would have been equally indignant, but whether the Imperial Government would have discovered any belicoso symptoms is at least doubtful. Fortunately for us, we are spared the necessity for speculating what Mr Gladstone would, or would not have done in the circumstances, and ho and wo, in the colonies, have been relieved of what might have proved to be a very uncomfortable nightmare, though the Jingoes have been robbed of a splendid opportunity.

"Wj: are fairly -warranted in believing that at last something practical will bo done in the direction of establishing the beet-sugar industry in Waikato. Many of those who attended the meeting called by Mr Graham, on Friday last, though they did no exactly come to sco ft", entered the room with a determination to test the weak points in the scheme. That so many hard-headed, practical men should have confessed to having had many of their doubts removed, is the best possible testimony to the soundness of the views entertained by Mr Graham. Nor iire those men likely to stop at any mere confession of faith. To be satisfied of its practicability is with the majority of them only the first step towards erecting the industry, and they are not likely to stand still. We cannot too highly commend the common .sense view of the situation taken by Mr Gilletfc. If farmers were to follow the course laid down by him, grasp probent opportunities, and beguile themselves le&s with visions of splendid profits that never come, agriculture would be more remunerative than it is. Whatever else will pay, it is as clear as daylight that ti-troa and fern never will. A meeting of the committee formed last Friday is called by advertisement for this morning at Hamilton.
