HAWERA, Tuesday. At the Police Court to-day, Robert Roskill, late lailway stationmaster at Normanby, was discharged on a charge of embezzlement, the Crown offering uo evidence, and it waa believed it was not a criminal case but simply one of muddling of accounts. MARTON, Tuesday. Messrs Blackett and Ross have coijpleted twelve miles of the survey of the Trunk Railway at the Marton end. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. A man. arrested for drunkenness last uight paid rather dearly for his spree. He lost £250, and had to pay fines, etc., amonnting to £2 9a. The Caledoniau Sports were attended by nearly 4000 people. The five mile walk waa won by F. Morshead. Time : 42mins. 42^secs. C. Longdown won the one mile and rive mile bicycle races, the former in 3inins. 12£secs. R. Munro gained most points in Highland dancing and received the gold medal. James McDonald gained the gold medal for the best piper competing. Altogether the gathering was very successful. TIMARU, Tuesday. To-day was observed as a general holiday here. The heat at times was intense. The principle attractions were the annual Flower Show and Oamaru Racing Club's Races, both of which were great success. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A circular issued by the Government respecting the hours of attendance of civil servants is now going the rounds of thedepavtments. The regulations are very stringent, and compel each officer to sign the attendance on arrival at the office in the morning, but should he be later than 9.35, he will lose his chonce of doing so, and the day will bo counted as if he was
absent. At the end of each month the number of hours of the attendance 'of officers will be made the subject of report. Mr C. T. Keyworth has, it is understood, been appointed Assistant-Secretary to the New Zealand Exhibition. Breeders of sheep who intend sending exhibits to the New Zealand Exhibition Irom this season's clip must put up samples of each description, labelled under piivate marks, stating the sex, age, months, growth, name and address, and corresponding mark under sealed cover. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The Kaikonra takes 8281 frozen sheep. She sails for Wellington to-morrow' morning. Wednesday. Sir .Tames and Lady Frofidergast arrived by the Waihora yesterday from England ; also the hou M. Holmes. No -word has yet been heard of Fitzgerald, who is wanted for the New thorn murder. A reward of £50 is announced. The Premier arrived by train to-night. Ho has been attending the Supreme Court sittings at Titn.iru.
