PROPOSED CONVENTION OF CHEESE FACTORY COMPANIES IN WAIKATO.
It will be remembered thnt at a recent meeting of the Hamilton Cheese Factoi y directors held last month, a resolution \\ as passed to the effect : — " That it is desirable to form a committee of the various cheese factory companies in the Waikato for the purpose of obtaining their united action in regard to the following matters, i.e. (1) The reduction of freight both by land and sea and of general charges ; (2) The best external market ; (3) Ihe reduction of duty in Australian and other ports; (4) The be-it means of packing both butter and cheet-e ; (5) The establishing of a cheese and buttei box manufactory ; (G) Also with a view of collecting and record'ng the information pained each year, and, if possible, of pub lishing a pamphlet to show what the industry has already and its capable of Accomplishing." In carrying this resolution the directors of the Hamilton factory appoin ted two of their number, Messrs Seddon and Swarbrick to represent them at the proposed convention, and communicated the proposal to the other factories in Waikato, inviting their co-operation, and, if agreeable, to appoint delegates and time of meeting. Hamilton was suggested as the most central place. At the meeting of the directors of the Cambridge factory on Saturday last, the proposal was considered, and was unanimously approved of, the directors agreeing that much good would result from the establishing of such a promising movement. The representations of a convention such as that suggested, working in unity with kindred conventions throughout the colony would, we have no doubt, be instrumental in securing many advantageous concessions in resuect to freight by land and by sea. The reduction of duty in Australian and foreign ports should not be very difficult to secure. In the warmer climate of Australia, cheese and butter do not form staple products, and as there is therefore no necessity for protection againbt the imported acttcle, it is to their interest to admit it as low as possible. The establishing of a bo* manufactory is perhaps about the most important of the proposals made. A small manufactory could be built at Hamilton where tins industry could be canied on. As most of the factories are going in for butter-making, butter kegrt could also be made there as well as cheese boxes. The entire movement redounds to tho credit of the porson who concoived it, and if thoroughly given effect to should be attended with very great and permanent advantages.
