ALEXANDRA.
* • OrR townsfolks most heartily endorse the action of the Cambridge people hi their eiuleavouis to get a return lo the old timetable. The new one, as expected here, is n nuisance to the geneiul public. The coach does not arrive with the mail until 7 p.m. — far too late for the outside settlers to get their mails. The new Tiaffic Manager of the railways, Mr Hudson, appears to be doing his best to give satisfaction to the general public, and is showing a liberal spirit to the poorer classes. I observe that excursion trains will leave Auckland for Waikato during the Christinas holidays, return tickets, 10s and 12s Gd. This is a step in the right direction, but why not £ive the W.ukato people the same ch.inee of a cheap change ? If an excursion tr.iin left the various up-country stations on New Year's Day, giving time to see the Auckland races at the same pried, what a number of people would take a trip to town, who have not for many years visited the city, simply on account of the (to them) excessive passenger rates ! Who does not know of his own knowledge, dozens of persons who have not tisittid Auckland any time from 10 to 20 years past, not being able to afford the expense of the tiip ? There is not much doing iv the township just now. The natives are all busy at their cultivations. T.iwhiao is still at Kawhia, but is expected to return to WhatiwhatiliO3 during the week. C.iptiin G.iscoigne the officer in change of thu A C. Force stationed here, beitis? about leaving for Opunako. A few of his friends arc determined that the parting shall be communicated by some token. The captain has most ably and conscie itiously fulfilled the office of lay reader here, whilst Mrs Giscoigne has also given her valuable and willing assistance to the Sunday school. A subscription for the purpose is being collected.— (Osvn correspondent, Deee'iib.H' 12th.)
