KIHIKIHI NEWS.
TOWN BOARD. A meeting of the Town Board was held on Friday evening. Present : Crs Farrell, (Chairman), Grace and Ellis. The minutes of the previous meeting? were read and confirmed. It was resolved that the chairman should telegraph to the Minister for Public Works, expressing disapproval on behalf of the Kihikihi people with the railway time table lately brought into force on the Waikafro railway. Regarding furze and briars, it was decided that legal proceedings be taken at once against those who have disregarded the notices served on them. Mr Forbes Gordon was appointed valuator, he begins his valuation on the 15th mat. The Chairman was requested to communicate-* with the Minister for Public Works with reference to the proposed bridge over the Puniu, drawing the Minister's attention t<> the fact that the traffic had materially in creased since the survey of the railway line had commenced, and urging upon him the desit ability of having the work proceeded with as quickly as possible. — One of the ratepayers requested permission to erect <i fence three feet on tho road, so as to enable him to grow a live fence. Leave granted. — Several small accounts were passed for payment. MISCEUANKOUS. It is to be hoped the Minister for Public Works will accede to the request of th's board and have the Puniu bridge built at once. Now that the surveyors are at woik the necessity for the bridge is obvious, for they draw their supplies from here, and when the river is flooded, as it is now, there is a great deal of trouble in transporting the provisions. Of course the surveyors will only be here for a short time, but soon after their work is finished the navvies will be at work on the 'formation, the bridge will bo more than ever required then. A cricket match was played here on Saturday, between eleven from Cambridge, and an eleven of the local club. The visitors aruved in the morning in one of Mr Carter's coaches, drawn by fi\e horse-. They were met, on arrival, by the local men, and play began boon after. Tho match was finished about six, when the visitors won by one. It was the best con tested game that has been played in tin-* district for some time. I could not get the scores after the match without putting the secretary to some tiouble, so cannot send them in time for this i'-Mie. but will send them for Thursday. The Cambridge men returned immediately after ttib match was finished, for, as they came by the swamp road they were anxious to get over the bad bridge before dark. Apropos of tliN bridge, it is safe enough for horsemen prowding they lead theii horses over, and foi vehicles if the liorK lare taken out and the vehicles wheeled over, but it it. not safe to drive over. A report was cii dilated here on Saturday that Mr Rochfoit had been stopped at Otorohanga by faotne natives, but on enquiry I found nut there was no truth in it. There is, 1 believe, no foundation foi the rumour. The natives would like to know how much the Government iufenoN giving for the land before the work of foiination begins. If there is no undei stand ing with them before then) they will at any rate protest, but no opposition of <\ serious kind need be expected. — (Own Coirespondent.)
