KHIKIHI NEWS.
THE TKUNK ItAIMVAY. Mb Kochkoht has made this place his head-quarterrf. He has rented a cottage to be used as an office during his stay, so that the work of preparing plans, &c, will be expedited as much m possible. HEMOVAL OK A.O. Twenty of the A.O. who arc stationed here are to be lemoverl to Kawhia and Hikuiangi. There will then be only seventeen on the strength of the station. Before removing them the Government might have put them to work on the road to Orakau, as aome compensation to the settlers for having kept control of that road for so long a time. The Waipa County Council, 1 believe, did ask for constabulary labour for it, but the request wai not granted. It is a pity the work was not done, as it will take more money to put it in proper order for the winter than the council can well afford. The men are to be employed on the Kawhia and Alexandra roads, and they might just aa well have been employed on this one for a month or two. It is a serious drawback to the settlers to have the road in such a bad state during the winter months, for just at the time they want good roads to cart their crops to the station this (me is such a sea of mud that they can only bring half loads over it, and, considering the distance they are from the railway station, this is a serious inconvenience. No doubt the council will do all they can during the summer to put it in as good order as the funds at their disposal will admit. The Government is reducing the strength of the force. Fifteen men were sent here for their discharge, and it is rumoured that there will be more changes shortly. The department, instead ef weeding out the defaulters, as has always been the case, dismissed those who had the shortest service. It seems an odd way of choosing who shall go, for few of those going have a crime on their defaulter's sheet, and they are fine smart-looking men. However, I suppose the department knows what is best to be done.
THE TE AWAMUTU-KIHIKIHI EOAU. The road between here and Te Awamutu is being lepaired. The ruts left from the winter traffic are being filled up, and the water-tables put in proper order. With a proper coating of gravel they will be in good order for next winter, but if not gravelled properly I am afraid they will bo as bad as ever when the wet weather sets in.—(Own Correspondent.);,,
