AN APPEAL TO THE LADIES OF HAMILTON.
TO THE EDITOR. Sin,— l understand it is contemplated by the various business people of this town (especially those on the West side) on and after Monday next to revert back to the old system of clobing their respective establishments at any and every hour of the evening, instead of at the uniform hour of seven, as at presont, and this, I am told, is mainly due to the action of one single individual, who, after being deputationised and entreated to respect the present hour of closing, still per-Msts in keeping his place of business open. Now, Sir, this is a matter the ladies of Hamilton can easily remedy, simply by not doing business after the present closing hour. The ladies of Hamilton, lam sure, are not more obdurate or less kind-hearted than those of other place's, and when an appeal of this kind is made to them on behalf of the shopkeepers and tlieii assistants (who, after being- cl<wed in these long, hot summer hours, can appreciate and look for the hour of release), I trust they will kindly respond by following the couiho indicated above. Will you, Mr Editor, wield your powerful pen in aid of this good cause, and impress upon those who need the lesson, that "the greatest good to tltti greatest number " is fast becoming the creed of the age, and that the few cannot benefit at the expense of the many. In tho meantime, I would ask business men to wait one more week and mako a last effort. Should that fail I have another idea, whk-h I think will meet the case, and which I will explain at a full meeting of business men, to lio held later on in the week.— l am, &c, Pro Boxo Publico. Hamilton, November 28th.
