THE WAIKATO ROUTE TO THE HOT LAKES AND THE UNION STEAMSHIP COMPANY.

The Union Steamship Company had a somewhat elaborate advertisement published in the way of a supplement to the Australasian in its issue of the Bth November, which, among the other atti actions of New Zealand, refers to the Hot Lake District of this province, and the respective routes thereto. But this great cempany, like all other companies, great and small, is ever mindful of its own interests, and ever caieful in their piotection, and to advance them in the favour of the tourist public does not scruple to inako mis-statementa, being justly of opinion that in respect to their route, or the route via. Tauranga, having little or nothing in itself to recommend it, it is absolutely necessary that some imaginary lecommendation should be conceived and circulated in its favour. But in publishing the ,*uh ertisement referred to, the Union Company has not been contented to exalt the Tauianga route to the almost entire exclusion of the route via Waikato, but it has, for reasons not hard to understand, made serious mis-statements as to the disadvantages of the latter route, It does not .state that the railway is open to Cambridge, but says that the journey between Hamilton and Cambridge is still made by coach. It says that " special airangements for lior&es and guides may be inadoat the hotel." It may bo inferred from this that there is only one hotel at Cambridge, and that communication by coach or buggy is unknown, but that the journey must bo made on hoiseback. The notice concludes by stating that " this j route takes two days (coacli hire 40s per day), but is only suitable for summer travelling." It must be well known to the Union Company that the tiip from Cambridge to Ohinemutu is an easy day's journey over a good load, in first-class conveyances , that the single faie is only 355, and the leturn only 00s, and that throughout the entue year, in winter weather as well as summer weather, C.uter's coaches and aie continually plying, and aio laigely patronised. It is a matter of much sm pi ibP that a company of tho standing of the Union Steamship Company should resoit to such means to foiward its own interests, and achieve its own fWhsh put pose. The Cambridgoßotornn road is now in \ery good condition, weather considei ing. During the last session »i Parliament a huge sum of money was v>ted for its thoiough formation. A (io\ eminent load party, under the chai go of Mr Mason, left Cambridge on Tuesday morning to cairy out the necessary woik. and by next winter the road will be one of the best in the Noith Island. It ceitainly parses through one of the mo.st attiactive and picturesque pieces of countiy to be met with in New Zealand.
