THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
TO THE EDITOR. I Sin,— l would like to say a few words with respect to the election for a new Mayor, i which takes place on Wednesday. Mr Peat was elected lust year without opposition, and whilst candidly acknowledging th.it during the term of his office he has acted t<> the best of his ability, and done his utnv>-l for the borough, I must say that 1 do not think he has been a success as the cbiof Magistrate of the borough. Whilst recognising his honesty and integrity of purpose, I consider that he has allowed himself to be led too much by other cmvicillors, and the immense amount of injudicious day work, the foolish proceedings le Mr Hay's bill of costs, which coat the borough some £30 ; the more recent fiasco re the furze business, and several other minor item«, serve to show that he is the right man in the wrong place. Mi Peat has had his innings, and hiirely it would be graceful on his part to allow another to have a try at the work. The office of mayor is not <i perpetual one, nor is it customary for the labt holder to fight for retention of the office unless requested to do so by an almost unanimous wish of the electors. It would have been, I think, judicious on Mr Peat's part, to gracefully retire when the influential requisition tv Mr Graham was published, instead of leading a forlorn hope to defeat. One thing, however, is certain — he will retire from office with the consciousness of having done his duty to the best of his ability.— l am. &c Burgess. Hamilton, Nov. 24, 1884.
