OUR FURZE.
TO THK EDITOR. Sir, — Your article of Saturday last, re the furze nuisance, contains some mos*. useful information, and shows very conclusively that local bodies have the power to abate the nuisance to a very great extent. Why the Hamilton Borough Council have not taken steps to carry out the Act and compel property owners to clear the roads in front of their sections, I cannot understand, as they have paid some £4 to a surveyor to in- | upect the nuisance, £5 or £6 to a lawyer for an opinion, which distinctly told them that they have the necessary power to carry out the. law ; besides some few pounds extra for serving some scores of useless notices, making a total expenditure of £12 of public money, and all for nothing, as they have stayed proceedings. I wonder if the coining election has anything to do j with the delay. I strongly suspect it h:\% as a great number of burgesses uttered loud complaints against being compelled to ele.m anything off the roads. However, aa the proceedings are bound to be started afresh as soon as the mayoral election is over, I will «ay no more at present, but will write more fully in a future issue. — I am, &c, ; Civis.
