MR HYLAND AND LUMSDEN.
TO THE KDITOK. Sir, — In your icport of MrD'Arcy Hyland'a hoise training exhibition in your issue of Tuesday last, some incorrect statements are made concerning me, which if left uncontradicted are calculated to ! damage my professional reputation. I did not challenge Mr Hyland. He challenged me and was not able to pay up the £20 at once. I told him a fiver would do for a deposit, and arranged to ride on Monday morning. I distinctly deny that I forfeited my deposit, aud when the stakeholder chose to baud it to Mr H. he did so at his own mk, as on Saturday, Hyland asked me to adjoin n the match until Wednesday, 20th inst., to which I agreed. The stakeholder was present at the time, and I then offered him the balance of the stakes, (£l5) which he declined to take on account of its being Sunday, and asked me to meet him at his ofh'ce on Monday, at 10 a.m. I said, if convenient I would do so, if not I would meet him at Ohaupo on Tuesday. On Tuesday I met the stakeholder between Tamahere and Ohaupo, and he then told me he had handed the deposit to Hyland on Monday, on the condition that he would put up the balance at Ohaupo if I appealed. I rodo to Ohaupo, met Hyland, and offered to put up jny money. He would not ascopt it, and told me he had had me for a fiver, and that if I did business with him I mubt do it in a clearer manner. I now publish in your advertising columns a challenge to ride Hyland, or the man he backed against me, (Hawkins) or any of their friends for £20 or double;, they to chose their own time within a month from date. I would diciw attention to another inaccurate statement in your report. The kicker which Mr H. is described as nding ami sliding down over her hindquarters, is my propei ty, and ia regularly ridden by my stable lads, and Mr Hyland never slipped down over her hind-quarters. He offered me five shillings if 1 would do the same with her as he did. I did not accept the offer, but offered to do so if he let me put on his clothes. He made fun of this remark, but I can piove to the satisfaction of the public, if required, that my remark was essential to the matter. — • I am, &c. N. H. Lumsdex, Trainer and Breaker. Cambridge, November 20th JBB4.
