SERIOUS FIRE AT HUNTLY.

Thk engine-house of the Taupiri Coal Mining Company narrowly escaped destruction on Saturday. At an early hour in the morning, the manager of the mine, Mr Collins, discovered that the bed of the winding engine, w Inch was constructed of wood, was on fire, and had almost been consumed. The damage done is estimated at about £100, besides the loss attendant on the temporary stoppage of work ; but this sum represents only a littleof what might have been lost had the buildings caught fire. The pumpingengine and machinery are under the same roof, and had these been damaged the mine must have been flooded and operations suspended for a considerable length of time. The origin of the fire is not known.
