M. E. DE HARVEN.

Amongst the passengers by the mail steamer on Saturday was M. E. de Harven, who has come to New Zealand for the purpose of promoting settlement of Belgians here, and also establishing commercial relations between this colony and Belgium. A number of the leading mercantile firms in Antwerp has formed a company with the object of favouring the project, and the Minister for Foreign affairs in Belgium, speaking on this subject recently in Parliament, said :: — £< This enterprise, although of a private nature appeals to and merits the interest of the Government. Thus whilst leaving to the work of the syndicate its original character, Government has not hesitated to mark the interest which it attaches to M. de Harven's success, in making efforts to obtain M. de Harven and his mission the kind consideration of the colonial authontities, and assuring him the assistance and protection of the Belgian agents." M. de Harven has letters from Lord Derby to his Excellency the Governor, and from Sir Dillon Bell, Agent-General, to the Minister for Immigration of New Zealand. In reply to a question by Mr Wakefield in the House of Representatives, shortly before the end of the session, the Government announced that they would afford M. de Harven all the facilities in their power in visiting the colony, but it may be staied that his special attention has been directed to this district as being probably the most suitable for a settlement of the kind it is desired to establish. Mr Beckx, Agent-General for Belgium in Australasia, is to meet M. de Harven in Wellington shortly, coming over from Australia for that purpose. M. de Harven intends to leave -for Wellington by steamer on Thursday. He is staying at the Northern Qluh.— Herald.
