WELLINGTON, Thursday. A very heavy southerly gale has been blowing all day, with continual ruin. A poll was taken to-day on the pro* posal of the City Council to borrow £75,000 for the Te Aro reclamation. The proposal was negatived by 448 votes. Friday. A heavy southerly gale his been blowr* ing all day, and the shipping is at a complete standstill. Very little damage is reported, with the exception that the telegraphic communication with the North has been interrupted aince last night. The hon. Mr Nurse was found early this morning lying in one of the Legislative Council rooms, partially insensible. Dr Grace was at once sent for, and Mr Nurse was removed to the hospital, where he lies iv a rather precarious con» dition. The Hinemoa, with the Northern members, will probably leave to morrow night.
DUNEDIN, Thursday. A miner named R. Gierney, of Beudigo, I Vincent County, fell down a 70-feet shaft, and lay there for over four daya He was rescued in an apparently dying ooudition, with broken jaw and head | badly cut, but no other injuries. He is doing favourably at the local hospital. The lipiacopal Synod opened its sitting this evening, when Bishop Neville delivered a lengthy address. He referred to the need of a cathedral, and advocated that the parish church might be devoted to the purpose on certain Sundays, if only monthly. He referred to his reaions for waiving his intention of ceremonially degrading Mr Stanford, who resigned hia ' license to practise law. The Bishop j explained that he found a great conflict of opinion as to the wisdom of carrying i out the step, and therefore, at the cost of some violence to his conscience, he hud determined to let the matter rest. The Mosgiel Woollen Factory Company's annual report states that the out. turn has been fully maintained. The amount of profit icmaining for disposal, after striking off £200 for depreciation of plant and payment of dividend at 10 per cent, per annum for the half-year ended April G (£2800) is £7<l9S 11s, of which the directors recommend the payment of a 10 per cent, dividend for the year (absorbing £2800), the transference of £.300 to the reserve fund (which will then stand at £17,000) and carrying forward £1697 11s. At the Anglican Synod to-day a r«to« lution was unanimously carried in farour of petitioning Parliament for the amendment of the Education Act to provide for religious instruction.
