WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The mcmbeis' ball last night was a grand affair, and 3S dozen of champagne was consumed. Almost all the Southern members will leave either to morrow or Friday.

NELSON, Wednesday. The Supreme Court has been occupied all clay in a case of much interest. The suit was introduced by Flora Willinmt, neice of the late Dr. Williams, against Mr H. D. Williams, brother of testator? with a view of obtaining a decision that he died intestate. The deceased made a will in 1855, under which his brother (the defendant) was chief benefactor for plaintiff. It was alleged that'deceased made a second will in 1877, revoking the former one, but this has never been found, and both sides admitted its destruction. Mr Atkinson, solicitor, gave evidence that he drew and witnessed this second will, the other witness being in England now. The question was whether the validity of the second will was proved, and his Honour directed that if it was the first will it could not be given life by the destruction of the oth<?r. The jury found the first will revoked ; that the second will was destroyed, and that the deceased died intestate. A. H. Lock ham was charged at the Police Court with passing cheques, and sentenced to two months' imprisonment. He came from Canterbury.

CHRISTCHI/RCH, Tuesday. The Unemployed Commission hold their first meeting for taking evidence tomorrow. It is proposed to entertain Mr John Holmes, M H.R . of Christchurch South, at a banquet on his return from Wellington. Wednesday. Robin Hood's consultation on the Melbourne Cup w.is drawn with the following result :— First prize, £956 goes to Kaiapoi, second, £430 to Christchurch, third, £230 to Tairua, Auckland Province.

DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The Episcopalian Synod opens tomorrow. Francis 'Poke, who wa6 arrested in Auckland, has been committed for trial on the charge of forging a cheque for £1. Ada's £100 prize lias been won by three employe's in the Daily Times Office, they having conectly placed the horses ten weeks ago. The local bookmakers fared \ve!l over Malua's win, but strange to say, only one backer who got a leg in with Rufus for the Derby, said to-day the Cup winner was going for him in his double. The fict that St. Albans fa sire of the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup heroes, has ciu&ed Ta mm a-ul Johnny Fjulkner to harden for the New Zealand Cup. The Mayor having been interviewed by the unemployed, telegraphed to the Minister for Public Woiks, wl o has replied that work \\ ill be reopened for them at Mosgiel. The corporation has taken on about a dozen.
