THE V.R. C. SPRI NG MEETING. CUP DAY. [Special message.] [Melbourne, November 4.

The weather was beautifully fine, and , the attendance was larger thau it has ever been before, it being estimated that there wera full one hundred and thirty thousand people present. The course was in excellent condition, and although the stand and hill was densely crow ded, the visitors had a most* enjoyable day. While the horses were saddling, Malua (the favourite) was surrounded by a dense crowd of, eager admirers and was supported heavily to the last. Hastings, Vergy, Plausible, Commotion, and OIF Colour had also plenty friends, and the condition of each was perfect. The preliminary canters were eagerly watched, and the favourites greatly admired. Malua, during the race, maintained a good position in the centre of the ruck to the home turn, when he emerged from the group, and coming with a rush at the half distance, passed Commotion, who was leading, and won cleverly. Commotion's performance was a grand one, and Plausible, Hasting, and Boolka all ran prominently and showed good form. The victory w.is a very popular one, and was received with most enthusiastic cheers. The ring, of course, lose heavily. The following are the details of the day's racing: —

THE R4CE. Twenty-four horseB faced the starter, who succeeded in getting them away on capital terms at the first attempt. Signor was the first to show in front, with Hilltop, Auchorite, Lord Wilton. Malua, Vergy, and Tremando next in order named, Hastings being at the head of the next division. Crossing the tan Hilltop rushed to the front, closely pursued by Anchorite, Blink Bonny, Vergy, and Tremando, in a cluster. When passing the grand stand on the first round Signor was still a length ahead, followed by Hilltop and Anchorite, The Broker and Bargo being on the outside together, Lord Wilton, Malua and Blink Bonny coming next in a cluster, Claptrap being last. Along the river, Signor maintained his lead of about a length ill front of The Broker, who was half-a-length in front of Hilltop; who again •Was nearly clear of Boolka and Bargo, then came Auchorite and Blink Bonny together, attended by Brown and Rose, Hippo griff, Malua, The Plunger, and Lord Wilton who constituted the ruck. This order was maintained to the bridge, where Plausible was , putting on a great spurt, and momentarily showing before Hilltop, Hastings, Comin.otion.jr a|id Plausible going on next, \v\th,BVdlka., Battalions, Anchorite, and Malua in good places in the centre of the course. Between the abattoirs aud the sheds The Plunger led the field at a slap- : ping pace, followed by Commotion and Plausible, both coming very fast, and gaining on the leader, The Broker and Hastings lying next, close together. Entering the straight The Plunger looked like winning, but when fairly on the line for home Commotion and Plausible both passed him, and a shout went up "Commotion wins !" At the same moment, however, Malua, who had been creeping up, came out from the ruck in the centre of the course like a shot from a gun, and caught the leader at the end of the carriage paddock, from which point a splendid race ensued. Every inch of the way was strongly contested by Mr Pearson's splendid horse, but Malua, who seemed to have more left in him, had always a little the best of the struggle, and amidst a scene of indesciibable excitement passed the bost nearly a length ahead of Commotion, Plausible, a length and a-ha)f away from the second was third, while, two lengths behind, Hastings was fourth, followed by Boolka, Battalioua, Anchorite, in the order named, with Claptrap, Bristol, Tremando, and Men imu last. —Time, oinins. 31/ sees.
