McPherson) and there there were upwards of forty members present. The ladies gallery and the other places set ajnrt for visitors were also extensively patroi.ised. Replying to the member for Raglan, the Minister for Public Workg said a sum of money had been placed in the estimates for repairing the Waikato-Raglan road. The member for Pukekura moved the first reading of the Hamilton Swimming Baths Bill, which was carried, and the bill was introduced and read a first time. The debate on the Women's Franchise Bill was resumed by the member for Mangapiko, who strongly supported the measure, —The member for Waitoa opposed the bill, because the natural result of the passing of such a measure would be the admission of women into the Senate — The member for Cambridge supported the bill, and the member for Waikare opposed it, — The member for Ngaruawahla, in a most amusing speech, ridiculed the object of the bill. He claimed that women were the property of men, because they had been formed out of a man's rib. — The member for Kirikiriroa in an elaborate speech supported the bill, adducing numerous arguments to prove women's right to the exercise of the franchise. — The Colonial Secretary, the Minister for Public Works and the Colonial Treasurer spoke against the bill. — The Attorney-General moved the adjournment of the debate, on the ground that several members, including himself and the promoter of the bill, desired to speak. — The Leader of the Opposition opposed the motion for adjournment, and- it was lost on the voices. — The Attorney-General then spoke strongly in favour of the bill, urging the fitness of women for the duty of exercising the franchise. — The member for Raglan replied shortly. He asked those opposed to the measure to let it go into Committee, and not to reject it on the second reading. — The motion was then put, and on a division the second reading was lost by 25 to 17.
