CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday.

At the .annual meeting of the Working Men's Club, to-night, the balance-sheet showed the assets to be £1921 over the liabilities. It is proposed to hold a working men's indtistiial exhibition in connection with the club during the bummer. At a special meeting of the Industrial Association a sub-committee was appointed to report on the railway charges upon carriage of machinery, coal, clay, &c. At the Police Court to-day the number of boys charged with various offences was remarkable. No less than sixteen, of ages ranging from eight to seventeen, were brought up. One was fined £5, or six weeks' imprisonment, for using obscene language ; nine others were lined £2 10s for creating a disturbance in the streets, and stoning a passer-by. The Divorce Court sat to-day, when a rule nhi was granted in the case Mcßae v. Mcßae. on the grounds of cruelty. Respondent, Alexander Mcßae, was formerly a merchant in Christchurch, and was married to petitioner in June, 1877. The evidence showed that respondent had frequently struck and otherwise ill-used his wife. Mr Thomas Luther Shephard was seized by paralysis just as he was leaving the Occidental Hotel, where he had been to enquire for news from Wellington, as an application had been made to the Government for some employment for him. A telegram had been received from the Premier by Mr Driver that night granting the application. ' He isstill in Hospital, and it will be some time before he gets about again. The committee of Otago Synod, after conferring with Otago University Council, have decided to recommend the Synod to found a chair of natural philosophy in connection with the University. Friday. The New Zealand Baptist Union Conference concluded to day. The committee were requested to try to arrange for a visit to the colony of Messrs Fullerton and Smith, Evangelists, from the Rev. C. H.
