Vogel said the ob]eot of the (Jovernment was to asceitain the cost of the woik at the tune of construction, less a reasonable sum for depreciation, and they would be quite agreeable to see a clause altered in anyway that might best achie\e that purpose. With the \ iew of eliciting an opening on the point, Mi DownieStewait moved that instead of atbitiation the \alue of the lines taken o\ei be decided by a comt of compensation. The amendment was accepted by the Government, and agieed to. Mr Wakefield moved to amend sub-section 2 of clause 0, &o as to make it read, " Shall take as a basis of a \aluation the cost of &iinilaii iailway^> in the colony at the date of such contract.'" Mr Stout agieed. Ih the schedule Mr Tuinbull nuned that the Waimate Railway be stiuck out. The line had been taken over by the (Jovcrnnient some time ago, and then thiscomp my lesumed again. After some dibciu^sion a division was taken : Ayes, 2!); noes, 15. The amendment was, theiefoie, lost. The Bill was then repot ted with amendments.
