HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the council was held last night. Pienent : His Woiship the Mayor, Cis. Dey, Bach, Scott, Tippcn, Tucker, and Steadman. The Town Cleik lead .in opinion on the fur/,e question from Mr "W. M. Hay. Mr Hay said the council had a right to sue piovided it could be proved that the fiuze obstiucted the ti attic, and that it had spread from the defaulter's propeity on to the road— After a shoit discussion it was agreed to forward a copy of the opinion to the members for the distiict, with a request that they would take steps to amend the law iclatmg to the matter with a view to making it moie woikable. A letter was> read from the .secretary of the Auckland Harbour Board concerning the price of asphalt, &c. The writer said the Haiboui Board had paid ns per squat c yard for the asphalt, the contiactor maintuning same for 12 months. Before adopting it for the biidge he recommended the council to wait until it was seen how the asphalt on the wharf would answer. So fai it had not come up to expectations. — The letter was refeired to the committee appointed to enquire into the matter to report. The pound committee reported that the pound had now been lemoved and rc-eruc-ted behind the county council chambers. — Theropoit was adopted, and the tender of Mr Evans to supply two new gates was accepted. — Mr Gaudin was appointed poundkeepei. The usual report oh the works in progress in the boiough was read, but, it contained nothing of importance. Tho following committees were appointed for the year : — Winks Committee : Crs. Tippen, (Chairman), Dcv, and Freer ; Legal Committee : Crs. Bach, Scott, and Steadman ; Finance Committee : The Mayor, and Crs. Johnson and Tucker. The Town Clerk reported that the overdraft amounted to £531 17s sd. A number of small accounts were passed for payment and the council rose.
