PROPOSED BRIDGE OVER THE PUNIU AT KIKIKIHI.
This work has now been in contemplation for some time, and its necessity may be said to have been more htiikingly felt within the pn&t few years. The Puniu i^ only foidable tit certain seasons of the year, and as a conMdera.bb population live on either hide of it, and, as settlement is rapidly advancing in the immediate dis trict, the uigency of the work is becoming daily moie evident. A large and influen-tially-signed petition was forwarded to Wellington some few days ago, urging upon the Government the necessity of having a sufficient sum placed on the Estimates to carry out the work. The settlers are anxiously awaiting a reply to their peti tion, and, trusting to the eneipy of their member, Mr Lake, they confidently evpect that the matter will be favourably entertained by the Government. The importance of the work cannot be over-rated, and the benefit which a biidge over the Puniu would afford to the district generally must be apparent to all.
