WANGANUI, Saturday. Threk of the ringleaders in the late clhgy binning of Mr John Bryce, were to-day fined 40s each for burning rubbish without give notice to the Town Clerk. The Resident Magi&tiate deprecated the practice as «t useless one, winch he hoped would uot occur again.

Active preparations are to be commenced at the inaible quart y, Casvvell Sound, in the couise of a day or two. The purchasers of the wreck of the Lastingham have chaitered the steamer Lyttelton, and that vessel will leave for Jackson's Head next week. Capt. Cooper, and some seven or eight divers, and a numbes of workmen, will go over by her. It is intended to moor the Lyttekon close to the wreck, so as to ha\e her available for lifting cargo out of the La&tingham. Monday. This morning his Excellency the Governor pi cscnted to Master Win. Rankin the bronze medal and certificate awarded by the Royal Humane Society through their Australian branch. The award was made in recognition of young Rankin's bravery in jumping into the haibour, and lescmng a little boy named Peicy, who was di owning.
NELSON, Saturday. A plague of rats has appeared at Collingwoori. The Colonist correspondent writes that fiom West Wanganui to Cape Farewell, the country, bush, and beach are overrun with rats, which made their appearance suddenly. Haw ks and gulls are preying upon the rodents, and some lads with a dog killed 4500. They are doing great mischief among oats, and rooting down to the potato seeds. It is stated that persons travelling to the south of West Wanganui met a drove of them, and cleared out to let them pass.
CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Over .")00 men of all tiades are said to be out of employment. The bum cine Court criminal session commenced this morning. The calender is not heavy either as to nature or number of cases. Chas. Ihinstonc, for horse stealing, was sentenced to two yoais hard labour. William Henry ■hick son, forget y, to two ye.us. Alexander Boldsh.up, \iolent a&sanlt, six months. Rowland Thomas Dossttt, bieaking into and stealing fiom house, two years. Thos. Robertson, embezzlement, one year, fteorge Hamill, for foige>7, and John Brook, larceny, were acquitted.
DUN'^DIN, Monday. In the Supreme Court to-day, three cases of forgery came up, the three prisoners pleading guilty. J. 8. Robin got two years, William Macfai-lane, nine months, and J. P. O'Connor, who only arrived from Melbourne by the Wairarapa on the 30th nit., and who passed a forged cheque whilst passing tbiongh here on his way to Wellington, also nine months. Jas. B. O'Flaherty, who is an habitual drunkard and vagrant was sent to gaol for three years, tor stealing a Masonic jewel, and got a sentence ■»? seven days for attempted suicide in the lock-up. Kobt. Mannel a negro, for stealintr a £5 note, gotthiee months. r J'hi3 prisoner when arrested by the police tried to swallow the note, which stuck in his throatjfor five hours, but was then disgorged. Adam Stroll was found not guilty of a heinous assault on William Hayes during a drunken spree at Naaeby. The man Pearce, who was convicted at the Jauuary sittings for the manslaughter of Matilda Hannavan, was guilty of gross insubordination on board the prison hulk on Saturday afternoon, and in the evening was brought before the Mayor as one of the visiting justices, who, having heard the charge, ordered him to a week's solitary confinement. In accordance with the prison regulations, Pearce will be brought bnfore the City Police Court in the course of the week.
