The House met .it 7.30 p.m. to-night. Dr. Newman g.i\e notice to ask the Government on Wednesday whether they would arrange foi po->t cards being used beyond New Zealand and Che.it Biitian. The amendments made by theLegislatise Council in the Married Women's Property Bill, OUgo Harbour Boaid Empowering Bill, and Foreign Companies Bill were agreed to. A message from the Council stated that the Pensions Bill, ISSI, had p,\ssed through all its stages without amendment. The Consolidated Stock Bill (Sir J. Vogel) was introduced, and the Impounding Bill was read .1 second time. Mr Ballance moved the second reading of the Weit Co.i->fc Settlement Reserve^ Amendment Bill. Mr Hakuene asked that as the bill affected the natives in his district, the second reading should be postponed until the bill was tianslated into Maori. Mr Bryce said the piinciple had already been confirmed by the House, but the measure would have careful consideration in committee. The Native Minister accepted an adjournment until Wednesday. The Registration of Births Extension Bill and the Slaughterhouses Act, 1878, Amendment Bill passed through committee, were lead a third time and passed. Mr Macandiew moved, " That one of the chief advantages to be derived fiom the establishment of direct steam communication with the United Kingdom would be the conveyance of letters at a postal chanre not greatly in excess of tho actual cost of traiiiifc, and that Government be requested to take such action a-, may best conduce to this lesult." After a statement from Sir J. Vogel, who e\ plained that the scheme was impracticable, the motion was withdrawn, and the House went into Committee of Supply. [Left sitting.]
