DUNEDIN, Tuesday.
Tuesday. A vr.KY large crowd assembled at the turn tl is evening, to welcome the Hon. R. .Stout. The Mayor (Mr Street) read an address expressing the pride of the citizens in Mr Stout's success in politics, and holding him up as an example for the }oath ot the colony to emulate. Mr Stout only sud a few words in reply, cxcusinu himself on the ground of physical inability to leply, and stating that he would not cue to go through the same physical stidiu again, and at the same time be subjected to the vile abuse ne had received horn vanous newspapers. A biass bind played him osit of the railway station. The following is a copy of the address piesented to Mr Stout : — "On behalf ot tho burgesses of this city, and the electors of Dunedin East, I have the honour to ofl'ui you their hearty congiatulations on your election to the high and impoi taut office of Piemier of tlm colony. You havefiom boyhood beeu a 1 evident amongst us, and by your energy, intelligence and application, lia\e raised youiself to tins eminent and responsible position, avoiding a stiiking example wOlw 01 thy the emulation of the youth of the colony. We sincerely trust your Government will be enabled to carry out many of the Liberal principles which you have long advocated, and, by wise and Liberal legislation, be success!ul in uising the colony f lorn that state of depression and despondency under which it his laboured for some years, and attain to that position of proapeiity to which,from its varied leaources and magnificent soil and climate, it is entitled to oc\ipy amongst the colonies of the Empire. Tho funeral of the late Mr E. Nathan, who had been in business in Dunedin for many years, and was a prominent member of the Masonic bcly, was attended by a large number of the general public and about 130 Masons. The Lodge of Sorrow was held in the evening.
