SAD DROWNING ACCIDENT.
A PKUULHULY sad accident occurred at Hamilton yesterday, by \\ liich a promis ing young lad named John Ede, si* teen years of age, lost his life. Ede attended the Hamilton West School, and yesterday afternoon, on being released from school he proceeded in company with a companion, a son of Mr F. Gaudin, to cut ferns on the bank of the river just above the eastern pior of the traffic bridge. While so engaged Ede's foot slipped and- he fell iuto the water, which at this point is very deep with a stiong current. The accident was seen by two or three people on the West side of the river, but they were, of course, too far away to render assistance, The poor boy could not swim, and appears soon to have lost his self-possession, for young Gaudin says he held a branch within his reach which he did not attempt to lay hold of. The lad was soon carried away by the current and sank. The alaim was at once given, and a number of people, including Sergt. McGovern and Constable Wild, were soou on the spot, but they were too late to render any assistance. A boat was procured and a search was instituted for the body, though it was felt that the task was hopeless. Ede's parents reside at Woodlands, and he was their only sou. While in Hamilton atteuding school he lo lged with Mr Pearson, Hamilton East. He was a bright, intelligent boy, and very popular with hid fellow pupils, upon whom l)is gad end has made a deep impression.
