THE PROPOSAL TO LEASE THE AROHA TRAMWAY. [BY TELEGRAPH.-OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Te Auoha, Wednesday. A deputation waited on Warden Kemick to-d.iy, and presented a numerously signed petition requesting him to stay the action of the county council (if in his power (o d > so), re disposing of the lease of the tramway on the Bth hist. The reasons assigned are that the conditions and length of lease, 10 years, are adverse to the interest of the gold fields; that in the present state of things the time is inoppoitune, and that to dispose of the tramway at piesent would preclude all hope of the chaiges being reduced as the traffic increases. Ihe Wai den expressed surprise at the hasty change fiom five yeais to ten yeais, and thought more time should have been allowed the public to consider the matter. He had doubts whether he could take action on the petition alone, but ceitainly would if it was supported by a written request th.it he should do so from the dissenting members of the council. This will be obtained, and the sale Is likely to bo delayed at least till after the election of the new council in November.
