THE EXEMPTION OF TOWN DISTRICTS FROM COUNTIES.

Mr Wrxr.s attended at the meeting of the Cambridge Town Board yesterday evening, and stated that he had received the following telegram from Mr J. 13. Whyte on the above matter: — " Government pieparing Municipal Bill for next session in which town districts will be constituted yuval boroughs, I think your wishes would fare better if postponed until that bill appears. If you think it urgent, however, I'll proceed." Mr Wells replied as follows : — "I think town board suggestions may await new Municipal Bill." In bringing the matter under the notice of the new boaid Mr Wells referred at length to the desirableness of the town being exempt from the county. He noticed that the county council were opposing the proposal ; whereas, a few months ago, they had been making representations to the members for the district in its favour. The council did not know, really, what they were talking about. It had been said that the county had helped the town with the Karapiro Bridge, which, in point of fact, was not true. This had been given as a | reason why they should not be exempted. He would strongly recommend the board to get clear of the council as soon as they could. From the council they had no chance of getting anything, as they were always outvoted. The Karapiro should have been a county work. The bill which Mr White said was about to be brought before the House wouW suit their object. They had nothing to gain and everything to lo&e by their connection with the county. — On the motion of Op, Hoqghton, the reply sent by Mr Wells to Mr Whyto was confhmed. — Ci, Hougliton took opcasicm to thank Mr Wells for the trouble he had taken in bringing this matter under the notice of the board, and assisting them by his experience and advice. He hoped they should always continue to have Mr Well's assistance in the public affairs of the town, and that though he (Mr Wells) had retired from office the interest which he had hitherto manifested in public matters would not be lessened. —Mr Wells, in a few appropriate remarks, replied to Or. Houghton, and assured the board jjhat at any time, if he wepe con» Tenient, he would only tie thq fiappv to giye the board any 1 assistance which bis expedience of board matters enabled him to render.,
