NATIVE TANGI AT CAMBRIDGE.
A. yoitno chief named Matekino Piripi of the Ngatikoriki tribe died at Cambridge rather suddenly on Thmsday morning. He was working in the Land Court on WevlnesvUy evening, and passed away on the following morning after a few hours illness. He was recognised as a young man of considerable tact and ability by the natives generally, and took an active part in the conduct of the Maungatautui case at Kihikihi, in which judgment was recently delivered. Tlie tangi commenced yosterd.iy morning on the Kar.ipiro flat and was of a very extensive chaiacter. Ovei 300 natives gathered in the vicinity, and a large number of Europeans visited the scene throughout the day. By way of refreshment a large quantity of both food and liquor was laid in. This consisted of three tons of potatoes, lOOOlbs of beef, 400 loaves, four casks of beer, 30 gallons ruin, and a laige quantity of bottled beer and numerous | sundries. The ceremony of distiibntion l was veiy iiitoiestinjj, and was nearly giving rise to a dispute among the respective tribes, who had gathered round to do honour to the departed. Nearly £100 was spent in liquor alone. The funeial takes place to day, w hen the body will be removed to the Maungatautari settlement for interment. The court has been adjourned till Tuesday.
