THE WELLINGTON POST ON THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT. [BY TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.
Wellington, Wednesday The Post to-night has a very laudatory 'article on the Financial Statement. It says that Sir Julius Vogftl faced the difficulties of the position one by one, traced them to their original causea, and clearly showed how they were to be overcome. There was no rashuess, no attempt to dazzle men's minds, or confuse their judgment and the statement was a thoroughly nnsensational and business-like one. But it was not as most of the statements of late years have been, a mere accountant's report on tho balance-sheets of the colony. Sir J. Vogel showed a most thorough and really marvellous grasp of the financial position of the colony and the causes which had conduced to bring it to the present happy condition. He clearly pointed out the nature and cause of the disease and Jie prescribed the remedy, a simple and efficacious one. " The Statement will restore public confidence, in the futuio of New Zealand, and prove we doubt not the starting point of a bright era of prosperity." The article concludes as follows :—": — " Some of the minor proposals we do not altogether agree with, such for instance as the Royal Commission on the local government, to the reduction of the school capitation, but generally the policy set forth will, we believe, prove acceptable to both the House and the country. It will b& attacked and criticised no doubt, but the proposals as a whole will commend themselves to the approval of the people. Last night-, effort will greatly enhance Sir Juiim Vogel's already high reputation as a statesman and a financier, while it sounded the death knell of Major Atkinson's character in the later capacity."
