WELLINGTON, Saturday.
At the Resident Magistrate's Court today, the case of Henry Tood, on three charges of embezzlement from the Gear Meat Company, was heard. Mr Stafford, on behalf of the eompmy, said from a recent circumstance which had come to their knowledge they were afraid they could not substantiate the charges. The case was dismissed. A deputation waited on the Hon. Mr Ballance this morning from the new Zea land It fie Association, asking that £1000 be placed on the estimates for prize money, &c. Mr Ballance said that £'2.")0 had been placed on the estimates by the late Government, but it was pointed out that this was too small a sum. Mr Ballance said he thought he could get £500, and promised to do his best in the matter. The man Dooley, on the charge of brutally ill-using his daughter by thrashing lior with a strap with a large buckle on the end, was sentenced to four months' imprisonment. Mr Wardell, R.M., said he had eximined the child, ! and found that both thighs were a living mass of bruises, and as black as ink. He much regretted that he had not the power of inflicting such a flogging on the the man as the child had' received. It would have given much pleasiue to order such a
flogging. Sunday. ! A fatal accident occurred yesterday in Taranaki-street to a middle-aged man named John fiudman, who was driving one of the Corporation drays, and sitting on the shaft. The horse was going at a walk at the time when he fell or was jerked off, and fell on his head. He was picked up, and Dr. Hutchison sent for, ! almost immediately. On the doctor's arrival, and within ten minutes of the accident taking place, Rudman expired. Death is supposed to have resulted from to the brain.
injury Monday. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Aorangai arrived from London via Hobart at six o'clock this,evening. The North Island Trunk Railway route committee held its second meeting today. The Hon. W E. Richaidson Minister of Public Woiks, chairman, when the following witnesses were examined :—Mr J, W. A. Marchant i chief surveyor and Commissioner of Crown Lands, Wellington Mr 8,. «T. Gill Under-Secretary for the Native Land purchase Department; Mr J. McKerrow, Sur-veyor-General and Secretary of Crown Lands; and Mr J. Blackett, Chief Engineer. It is understood to be the intention of the committee to sit daily, and to ask the House to allow it to sit while , the House is sitting. Upwards of 40 witnesses have alfeady been snmmoued. The hotel absconders, Poppena and MoGrath, returned last night by the Wakatipu from Sydney. Poppens was charged before the magistrate to-day, and remanded until Wednesday. Accused was unable to obtain bail. McGrath will be brought up to-morrow. Tbe Aorangi has two locomotives for the Wellington- Manawatu Railway Company. Over £1000 has been taken by the Oriental Bazaar.
