RAGLAN.
PUBLIC MEETING. Following the example set before them by the people of Hamilton and Cambridge, the residents here have determined to hold a public meeting with the object of definitely deciding what district refinements it would be desirable that Mr Lake, M.H.R., should try and secure for us. Mr Wm. Duncan is the convener. With such an end in view it would be well, that the residents should not only be just, but not immoderate in their demands upon Mr Lake's exertions. In this way they will have better reason to anticipate that their requests will gain favourable consideration. A large attendance is expected, as people should try to exert themselves, to attend a meeting when they will have the opportunity, to gain some assistance in bringing any particular district requirement under the notice of the Government through our member, provided the majority of the meeting consider it necessary. The meeting will be held in the council chambers on the 20th inst.
COPPER DISCOVERY. Uanuku, a member of the Ngatitoa, tribe, and a resident of Nelson, is now on a visit to the natives in this district, endeavouring to secure their co operation in utilising a field of copper ore which he asserts has been discovered on an island called Rangitoto, near the French Pass. Mita Karaka and Wirihana (of Te Akau), it appears are two of the trustees of the property. Uanuku states that £30,000 can be obtained from a New Zealand syndicate for a lease of the island. I have seen a specimen of the ore and also a small bar of copper which has been extracted from it, and both look excellent. The lode is 12ft. thick. While on the subject of ore discoveries, I may say that coal has been found much nearer the township than that field found last summer, and for which Messrs Chambers and Chamberlain gained a prospecting license.
LOCAL LIBRARIES. Both the Raglan and Ruapuke Libraries have just received a large assortment of books of an excellent character, and great care has evidently been manifested in their selection. A word of praise is due to the two librarians, Messrs A. Gilmour and Wm, Johnstone, who perform their duties in a highly creditable manner.
FLAX INDUSTRY. A marked depression at present exists in the above industry here, which may be principally attributed to the low price of the prepared article. Two more mills have lately started operations, owned respectively by Messrs Moon and Leatham. With an improved market a large quantity could be exported.— (Own Correspondent.)
Mr Allwill, Redwood, announces his well known stallions will stand in the district this year. The first meeting of creditors in the estate of Messrs Sandes and Napper, will be held at the office of the Deputy Assignee, Waikato Times Buildings, Hamilton, on Friday next, Commencing at 10 o'clock.
