A TOWN BOARD FOR TE AWAMUTU.
I Some time ago a meeting of the residents I was held to discuss the ad\ isability of •having Te Awamutn formed into a Town ■district, the lcsult of which was that a was drawn up and signed by Pdearly eveiy resident hou&oholdoi piayIft'g the Government to proclaim Te Awaniutu a town distnct. For some time nothing was licit tl of the m.ittci, and Mr Mitehelsou was wiied to to asceitam whether the petition hail been reeoised ir, Wellington, but he could find no trace Of it. It was pioml to ha\c been forwarded by Mr D, A. Tole to the Under Seeic tar v but no inoie was heaid of it. The general mipie^sion is, that it was lost among tho'C papcis and documents which a defeated Government sometimes finds it com tnientto lose befoie their suocessois occupy then places and pry into the pigeon-holes and get a lot of nnpbasant infoimation genei.illy. Mi I' Mitchelson a cry kindly olieied to take charge of a new petition, if sent, and promised to see the matter thiough for us. Accordingly a ftesh one was di awn up, signed and forwanled to Wellington, with the result that a telegiam was ie ceived on Thins lay, asking the committee (which was foimcd to enny the wishes of the icsidenU into c(kct) to name a returning oilicer and dates of nomination, polling, and fiist meeting of commissioneis, which they drl, and forwarded the lcply to Wellington foi gazetting so that in the couiseof a month will be duly constituted a town. Tlieie one ad\anta«e in the cliance, that is, the main streets will be Kept in good order and not left m the dfcgiacefnl state |in which they aie at picfeent. — (Owii I Correspondent.)
