PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES AT THE HAMILTON EAST SCHOOL

A large assembly of parents and friends of the pupils attending the Hamilton East High School and District School met yesterday to witness the presentation of standard ceitificates^awaided to the pupils as the result of the late examination. About fifty people were present, the chairman of the school committee, Mr ¥. Gaudin, presiding. In opening the proceedings he referred to the very satisfactory progieas the school had been making under the present staff of teachers. The fact that such a good proportion of scholars had gained certificates must be very gratifying to the paients, and very great credit was due to Mr Stevens, the head-master, for bringing this about, as before his appointment the school had suffered greatly through the many changes in the staff. The Chairman, in speaking to the children, desired them to give increased diligence and attention to fuither the efforts of their teachers. After the presentation of the ceitificates, the Rev. R. O'O. Biggs, in proposing a vote of thanks to the teachers said that as a parent of one of the High School pupils, he wished to testify to the satisfaction he felt at the progress made by scholars in.this department, and considering that many of those attending the High School had commenced their education in schools conducted on a different f-ystem, he thought it reflected great credit upon Mr Bindon that so good a result has been obtained at the late examination. He would also add to the remarks of the chairman m leference to what was due to the teacher, that there was also another side to the question. The builder could do nothing without the mateiial, and he felt that it must be very gratifying to the parents to see that their children were capable of assisting to bring about such satisfactory results as they had that day to commemorate. Mr Stevens in responding, thanked the parents for their kind expressions of confidence, and trusted that next year a much larger percentage of pupils would gain certificates of merit. The Chairman said, before separating he desired on behalf of the school committee to propose a vote of thants to the parents for their attendance. This was responded to Col. Lyon in suitable term*?, and the scholars were th'en dismissed.
