WANTS OF THE CAMBRIDGE TOWN DISTRICT.
At the monthly meeting of the Cambridge Town Board, held yesterday, it was agreed to forward the following communication submitted by the chairman, Mr T. Wells, to the member for the district, Mr J. B. Whyte, asking him to ejive the same his immediate attention. "Ihe Duplicate Road.— Respecting this matter, you are aware that the railway from the cemetery corner comes down the middle of the road ; also that the old portion lies on the west on Taylors house side. When the^ railway formation contract was let, it included forming and gravelling a road on the other side of the line. Thi3 was done, the new road terminating in a hole about 20 chains from the town boundary. We ask that this road may be completed jfco the railway »t»tion a distance" of .atfcpt 80 chains. The railway bas'fenced off the made portion from one «ide jof ' the, line and the r^ident protiertv ' hplddnj are justly complaining and asking that 1 at least' one equal to 1 what they, Jiad before be given them.' The in leaving the road unmade is perpetrating an injury on ou,r board, »n,d tbi ownen
of frontages to that aide of the street. This we will thank you to give immediate attention to and try to l'eriied/. "Town Emjowmknts. — Th-<s sections given to the town except the Public Hall iiml library site, are on the 1 anks of the Kirapiro, and for revenue purposes valueless. Wo particularly w.mt 575, the sale yard site, and .774 the paddock opposite, find section 017 adjoining the Public Hall. These uere all officially promised, vide Mr Tul. 'a letter. '• VoriMi fok a Lovn. — The majority now required to authorise a loan is twothirds of tlu j total votes exeicmble (sec section 13 Town Districts Act Amendmenent. 1883), whilstnnder the Municipal Corporations Act one half is sufficient. Get us at least put on this footing, or, hotter sfcill. let a two-thirds majority of the votes polled carry the proposal. Our lo.iu of jCo'OO to impio\c the Public Hall and Library is hung up awaiting some such amendment. The result of a poll taken some short time ago showed a large majority in favour of the loan, and yet we cannot proceed. To get the majority now required, even for the most popular loan in any district, is, in my opinion, almost an impossibility. '• Cambridge Rotorua Road. — This arterial Government road is in an almost impassable state, and is a disgrace to the country and the system which tolerates it. Try to get this attended to in some shape. "Tk Aroha-Morrinsvillk Railway. — Every effort should be made to get the contract let for the permanent way and station buildings on this length, which will connect Waikato with Te Aroha." 11 Municipal Act v. Town District Act. — The letter then suggested that Mr Whyte should have the Municipal Corporations Act amended, so that the number of members required for the board will be five or seven instead of as at present, this amendment to have effect in towns of from 500 to 3000 inhabitants. The Town Districts Act could then be abolished al together, town districts having in eveiy other respect the powers of boroughs." " Local Elections. — The next rep re sentation made was in lespect to local elections. This suygestid that all local elections, such as town hoards, licensing committees, school committees, <&c , should be disposed of on the same day This it whs estimated m.is consdered likely to save a lot of ♦ime, expense and tinuMe." — The board unanimously adopted the above, and it was agreed that the communication be forwarded by the first mail to Mr Whyte.
