The funeral of Colonel Leckie took place to-day with full military honours. In reference to the rumour that Chief Justice Sir James Prendergast did not intend to return to the colony, a letter received from him by the recent mail states that ho hopes to be in New Zealand about Christmas. H. D. Bell, Crown Prosecutor, is seriously ill, and his condition is precarious. Messr3 Terry and Baillie's saw-mill at Papawai, near Grey town, was burnt to the ground about five o'clock this morning. The mill was insured for £600 in the New Zealand office. The engines were only slightly damaged, and a small quantity of sawn timber was saved. The ougin of the fire is unknown. * At a meeting of the creditors of Waring Taylor, held to-day, the assignee explained the reason for calling the creditors together, that as bankrupt would again come up for examination on Monday next, he had decided not to take any steps until specially directed to do ssto t he having fulfilled his duty in submitting the report to the court relative to the affairs of the debtors. Mr Travers, counsel for the Assignee, pointed out that the Assignee had performed his duty, and was not required to take any further part in the examination except specially directed by the creditors. After some discussion as to who shall pay the costs if a prosecution was necessary, the following was agreed to, " That this meeting empowers the Official Assignee to engage counsel to cross-examiue the debtor.

DUNEDIN, Friday. Detmihay's general store, Wyndham, was destroyed by fire shortly after midnight yesterday morning. It is supposed to have been caused by the overheating of the store by a fire in the sitting-room of the Apanua Hotel. The Bible-in-schools Association will petition Parliament at an early date. Mr Pyke, M.H.R. for Dunstan, will be tried by judge and jury to-morrow at Tapanui for treason. k
