THE GREAT SCULLING RACE.
Hanlan Beaten by Beach. [reuter's telegrams.^ Sydney, Saturday. The rowing match for the championship of the world and a stake of a £1000 took place this afternoon over the champion course of the Parramatta River, and resulted as follows :—: — William Beach, Dapto .. 1 Edward Hanlan, Taronto .. 2 The sculliug race between Edward Hcinlan, of Toronto (Cauada), and William Beach, of Sydney, for £500 a-side and the championship of the world, took place to-day, over the regular course of the, I'arramata River. The weather was magnificant, but fche water was slightly rough. A splendid start was effected, and a dead level was maintained for the first quarter mile. Hanlan then forged ahead, ami when a mile and a half had been covered the Canadian was about a length in advance. Beach, however responded, and rowed right down on Hanlan. The latter allowed his boat to cross," and a foul took place. Hanlan put up his hand, and claimed " a foul " Beach, however, kept pulling away. Hanlan followed, but Beach came to the po3t an easy winner by five or six lengths. Time, 20m. 293. The umpire disallowed the foul claimed by Hanlan. |
(Received 18th, 1.20 p m.) Hanltm's Reason for his Defeat. Sydney, Monday. After the race on Saturday a most cordial interview took place between Beach and Hanlan. The latter admitted he was beaten, but said he was paralysed by the close proximity of the steamer Tamki, which unfortunately bore down too close to his boat. [Received August 18, 1 p.m.] Sydney, August 18. An immense concourse of people witnessed the boat-race on Saturday, no less than GS steamers being crowded with spectators. Great enthusiasm was displayed here over Beach's- victory. Ifc is thought certain that another match will arranged.
