A vbky good hit was recently made at an election in Scotland by one of the defeated candidates. A gentlemen approached him with " Well, Mr. , how do you feel ?" «' Well," Baid he, " I feel, I suppose, pretty much as Lazarus did." "As Lazarus did? " said the first speaker. " How is that ? " " Why," said he, " Lazarus was licked by dogs, and so was I." The latest fraud in jewellery is an extremely ingenious one. Thin plates of some precious stone, as, for instance, of emerald, have melted glass of the same color poured in- on one side. The real stone is set outside, bo that, when tried, the jewel presents every appearance of being genuine and of the proper hardness. These stones are called in trade pierres fines .doublees. The only test is to holdthe stones hedgewise, when, of coarse, the two sides will show diffarent* refraotion, and connoisseurs are thus able to detect the fraud f when, however, the stone is mounted this cannot be done, and as-yet no method of detection is known.
