'< / - London, August 11. TllK'third contest between the Australian cricketers and an eleven of All England commenced to day at Kennington Oval. The weather was fine, and as the greatest interest had been taken 11 the match, the attendance of spectators was enoimous. The ground was in good order, and an excellent wicket was pitched. The All England team is composed a3 follows :— Dr'W. G. Grace, Lord Harris, Hon. A. Lyttleton, Mr W. W. Read, Mr A. G. Steel, Barlow, Barnes, Peat, Scotton, Shrewsbury, and Ulyett. The Aus tralians won the toss, and went in fiistto the w lckets, McDonnell and Baimeiman being sent in as usual to open the play. The latter soon succumbed, having only contributed four when he was caught. Murdoch then became McDonnells partner, and both batsmen soon became firmly set. McDonnell hit freely all round, <uid Murdoch being also in good form, runs came lapidly. The century was reached without a separation being effected, and the latest telegram from the Oval states that McDonnell is not out with 86 to his credit, and Muidoch not out with 36 runs. Evening. Murdoch and McDonnell continued to maintain an excellent stand against the Euglish bowling, and sroied rapidly, notwithstanding frequent changes of bowleis. The board showed 200, and they were still at the wickets, but shortly afterwards McDonnell was caught when Ins ■core stood at 103. His innings afforded an excellent display of batting, and he was loudly applauded on his retirement Scott was the next man, and piovod an able partner to Murdoch, who-was batting in grand form. Scott speedily collated the bowling, and aided Murdoch by further augmenting the score, which soon ran up to 300. Au additional 03 had been made when the stumps were drawn for the day, the score standing as follows :—Bannciman, c, 4 ; McDonnell, c, 103 ; Muidoch, not out, 143 ; .Scott, not out, 101 ; extras, 10 : total for two wickets, 363.
