seats in the Legislative Couucil. It had been stated that Mr H. R. Rnssell, of Hawke's Bay. had made a.sirai^r forfeit, but it proves to be incorrect. Information has been received that the Shaw Saville Albion Company's chartered steamer had Sailed "from Rio Janeiro on the 11th inst. for London, and hei 1 meat waa reported in splendid condition. w The captain of the Salvation Army has had his watch stolen. While conducting proceedings he placed his watch on the table so as to oheek the timo, and subsequently looking for it found it gone. He alluded to the theft at Monday and last night's meeeting3, but as there was no response to hi 3 appeal for the property to be returned the matter has been placed in the hands of. the! police. Mr J. G. Holdsworth, Who for a number of years has held the position of Commissioner of Crown Lands, is suffering from a severe stroke of paralysis, and hir condition is deemed very precarious. Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co. have received the following cablegram from London, dated August 12 :— " Crossbreds have advanced 5 per cent.; for other descriptions the market is firm." «
