THE WAIPA ELECTION.
Official Declaration of the Poll. The result of the polling for the Wai pa election was officially declared ou Saturv day last at the Court house, Hamilton, at noon. There was a good attendance of the electors. The Returning Oißcer, Mr Thomas Kirk, read the result of the polling a? fc follows :—: — w Lake. Jack.son. 519 481 Less votes Ik £ ' disallowed ] 1 f\ Hi 478 Majority for Lake, 36. He theiefore declared Mr Edward Lake"to have been duly elected to represent the electoral district of W.iipa in th<House of Representatives. Mr Ivii k then invited the successful and unsuccessful candidates to address.those present. .Mr Lake, who was received with applause, 4 said he would take this oppoitu--Iriity of/ thanking the electors of Waip.i jfor -"jbne "honour they had done him in placing him at the head of the poll, an honour which he felt all the more from the fact of liis candulatuic being so .short. Many tiiHing asperities had doubtless been indulged in, and some things had been said and done which had better ha\e been left unsaid and undone ; but at the same time it was matter for congratulation that the contest had been conducted with an absence of any bitterness or animosity. Now that it was over he hoped both sides would make up their minds to forget and forgive, and shake hands. (Appkuse.) He trusted that those who had faithfully supported him would gi\r him a fair chance. Ho would endeavour to do Ins best, and hoped at the end of his teim to find that he had not forfeited their confidence, and that the constituents weie not ashamed of their representative. (Applause ) Major Jackson, who was also appl aided ' on rising, said, although not Miecjs^ful m the late contest, he ought to be pioud ot the support accoided him. At the last moment he had to fight against a combination as poweiful as it was une\pected He heartily thanked those elcctois who had voted for him; he was particulaily indebted to the eleotois of Hamilton, Whatawhata, Kaplan, and Kawliia. In conclusion he would e.xpi ess . i hope that on another occasion ho would occupy a better position. (Applause ) A vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, pioposed by Major Jackson, and seconded by Mr Lake, teiminated the proceedings.
