CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The first election of a member of the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College by college graduates took place to day, when Archdeacon Haiper was elected to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr H. J. Tailored. Sunday. A large meeting was held in the Oddfellows' Hall on Saturday night, to consider the question of colonial defence. The Mayor presided, and the following resolutions weie passed unanimously, and otderod to be sent to the Government :—: — (]) That this meeting considers it of the greatest importance that the principal ports of this colony should be put in a state of defence forthwith, by mounting in position the 22 heavy guns which ware purchased at at a cost of between £40,000 and £50,000, and which have been lying useless for about six years. (2) That in the opinion of this meeting the time has anived for the volunteer force of New Zealand to be put on a similar footing to that of the Victotian volunteers, viz., the piinciule of payment for one entire day's drill in each month."
