After referring to the events of the \ ast session, Mr Mitohelson defended the new railway tariff on the ground that it was not fanthat the rest of the colony should 1 c trade to contribute to Canterbury, lie was in favour of the management of the railways being vested in a non-political boaid, butdeptecaWd any hurry in the matter. He warmly defended the Native Laud Bill, and the general policy of Mrßiyce, which he conciixed to be necessity 'in the interest not only of the nathes 'themselves but of the colony. On the subject of the North Island Tiunk Railway, the minister was guruded. He said that out of four routes proposed only two were worthy df consuleration, namely, the Mar-ton and the Sfiatfoul routes. Government had not decided which of these it would adopt, but if the Opposition had not acted with such unseemly has^e, it was probable that by this time the surveyors would have been actively engaged in laying out the Imp, He was in favour of the continuation ot nominated immigiation, and the extension of the trnuk line of railway northward from Helensville. He referred to the nuestiou of retrenchment, and claimed that if the Government had remained in office it would have effected a saving 01 £30,000 or £40,000 a year. He generally charged the Government with having purchased support by large grants to districts, and said Mnjor Atkinson's downfall was owing to his having lost the confidence of the country.
